TECHnix
Every now and then we’ll be including this new section called TECHnix – featuring techniques to help you with technical matters. In this edition, we explore what you can do to help ensure good reproduction of your logos and photos.
Here are some of the secrets…
- Images pulled from websites are generally too low a resolution for printing. Onscreen resolution is usually around 72dpi (dots per inch) whereas print usually requires more like 300dpi.
- Remember it’s not just a matter of making an image 300dpi. It’s important to consider the dimensions the image is at 300dpi. For example, if the photo is to be run quarter page size, it’ll need to be more than 3cm x 3cm at 300dpi.
- Email photos as jpeg files rather than eps files because jpeg compresses the file size. But make sure the jpeg is prepared at good quality compression and is high resolution.
- Where possible, email logos as Illustrator / vector eps files as this ensures crisp, re-sizeable reproduction without loss of quality.
- Images need to be provided as individual files, not embedded in Word documents as they’re not usable.
Tip: For transferring files larger than 10MB per email transfer, if you don’t want to burn them to a CD ask us for our ftp site and upload them to us that way.
